Description
California Fire Insurance Investigation
If you’re one of the hundreds-of-thousands of homeowners in California who have lost their insurance recently, you know the state is in a crisis. And it’s only gotten worse despite efforts by the state to reign it in. One of those efforts included new regulations that were supposed to make coverage available in high-risk areas. However, a recent New York Times investigation found that wasn’t actually happening. Jo Becker is a reporter in the investigative unit of the New York Times and a four-time Pulitzer Prize winner. She joins us today to explain what they discovered.
Thien Ho Golden State Killer Book
Few cases have loomed larger in Sacramento history than the Golden State Killer. Before becoming Sacramento County District Attorney, Thien Ho was the lead prosecutor in the trial and conviction of Joseph DeAngelo. He is pulling back the curtain into a new book. DA Ho joins Insight with The People vs. the Golden State Killer, an insider account into how one of America’s most elusive predators was finally unmasked.
SNAP Food Benefit Fragility
The federal government shutdown has put food assistance programs in the spotlight as SNAP benefits, or CalFresh in California, ran out at the end of last month. The disruption has thrown millions of people into uncertainty, especially amid back-and-forth struggles between the Trump administration and courts on whether to fully fund SNAP using contingency money. This also comes following emergency expansions of these benefits during COVID-19 to help people in need put food on the table. Lauren Au, Associate Professor of Nutrition at UC Davis provides an overview of what these benefits are, and how they can be impacted by shifting decisions on the federal level.
